Can a timber frame pavilion or pergola be dismantled and moved?
This question comes up most often from customers who rent their property, plan to move within a few years, or are building on land that may change use. Here’s an honest answer:
Is disassembly technically possible?
- Yes — NORWEH kits are assembled with bolts, lag screws, and mechanical fasteners rather than adhesives; in theory, every connection can be undone
- The LT model is more disassembly-friendly than the HT — bolt connections are more straightforward to reverse than mortise and tenon joints, which require the tenon to be withdrawn from the mortise pocket
Practical challenges of disassembly and relocation:
- Foundation removal — concrete sonotube footings are permanent; helical pile footings can theoretically be removed with specialized equipment
- Timber condition after disassembly — roof deck boards and stained timber may not reassemble perfectly after being removed and transported
- Reassembly effort equals or exceeds the original assembly
- Moving heavy timber components requires a flatbed truck or trailer
Alternatives to relocation:
- If the property is sold, the pavilion adds value to the sale — many buyers consider a well-built timber frame pavilion a compelling feature
- If selling without the pavilion, negotiate its value into the sale price or sale terms
If relocation is a serious possibility:
- Choose helical pile footings over concrete — they offer at least theoretical removal
- Photograph all components during assembly for reference
- Consider the NORWEH LT for its simpler disassembly pathway
