What is the best placement for an outdoor pavilion in my backyard?
Placement is one of the most important decisions in your pavilion project — and one that’s very difficult to change once the footings are poured. Here’s how to think it through:
Distance from the house:
- 10–20 feet from the back door is the most functional range — easy trip with food and drinks, close enough for guests to feel connected, far enough to feel like a separate destination
- Closer than 10 feet can feel like the pavilion is crammed against the house
- Beyond 25 feet starts to feel disconnected, especially when carrying food from the kitchen
Sun and shade considerations:
- Note where shadows fall in your yard at different times of day — a pavilion with afternoon shade (east-facing) is more comfortable for summer use than one that gets western sun from 2–6pm
- If your yard is mostly sunny, orient the pavilion so the roof provides the most shade in the direction of the afternoon sun
Views and privacy:
- Position the pavilion to frame your best view — garden, pool, tree line — rather than facing a fence or neighbor’s home
- Consider a privacy wall on one or two sides if the pavilion would otherwise face a road or adjacent property
Setback requirements:
- Check local ordinances — most US municipalities require permanent structures to be at least 3–10 feet from property lines; some counties require greater setbacks
- HOA covenants may have additional placement restrictions
