Can I mount a NORWEH timber frame pavilion on an existing deck?

Mounting your NORWEH pavilion onto an existing deck is a very popular configuration — it integrates the pavilion seamlessly with your existing outdoor living area and eliminates the need to dig footings through the deck surface. Here’s everything you need to know to do it correctly.

The core requirement: structural joist connection

The pavilion posts must connect into the deck’s structural framing — not just the decking boards. Decking boards are cosmetic surfaces; load must transfer through the posts into the joists or beams below. Attempting to bolt post bases only into decking boards will result in failure over time.

Step-by-step deck mounting process

  1. Locate your joists: Use a stud finder or examine the underside of the deck to identify joist locations and direction. Mark joist centerlines on the deck surface where each post will land
  2. Confirm joist sizing: Standard residential decks built to code use 2×8 or 2×10 joists on 16-inch centers — this framing is typically sufficient to carry a NORWEH pavilion. Older or lighter decks may need assessment
  3. Position post bases over joists: Each post base bracket must land directly over a joist or blocking installed between joists — never between joists in open air
  4. Through-bolt the post bases: Use 1/2-inch through-bolts with large washers on the underside, tightened against the joist face. Through-bolting (bolt passes completely through decking + joist) is significantly stronger than lag screws alone for this application
  5. Install blocking if needed: If your post layout doesn’t land on existing joists, install solid blocking between adjacent joists at each post location to create a bearing surface
  6. Seal penetrations: Apply weatherproof sealant around all bolt penetrations through the deck surface to prevent moisture intrusion into the decking and joist

Load assessment for your deck

Most residential decks built to standard US building codes are designed for 40 lbs per square foot live load — more than sufficient for a NORWEH pavilion. However, consider these factors:

  • Decks over 10 years old should be visually inspected for joist rot, ledger fastener corrosion, and post base deterioration before adding a pavilion
  • If your deck is cantilevered, elevated, or was built without permits, have a local contractor confirm load capacity before proceeding
  • Adding a heavy roofing material (standing seam metal) vs. shingles adds meaningful weight — factor this into your assessment if your deck is older

Special consideration: composite decking surfaces

Composite decking (Trex, Fiberon, TimberTech) is fully compatible with deck mounting. Use the same through-bolt process, and seal composite penetrations with manufacturer-recommended sealant to maintain warranty compliance with your decking product.
